How did Product Hunt become so great without a previous “Product Hunt”? That’s the paradox!
I started an article previously about Product Hunt. (You can read it here.) It highlighted its importance for products’ creators and exploring products enthusiasts mentioning its very high traffic, showing what it looks like, and how it works for the products to make your product highly known for the site users.
The Grandfather Paradox
What is really interesting about Product Hunt, is that it makes me think about the Grandfather Paradox.
This paradox is basically about assuming that you go back in time and kill your grandfather. That will lead to you not to exist. In that case, who would have killed your grandfather?!
If you really interested in the grandfather paradox, you can watch this video here.
Anyway, how did Product Hunt become famous without posting itself on a website that is like Product Hunt?! When you think about launching a product, the first thing that comes up into your mind is who will use it and how will it be known. How did the founder, Ryan Hoover, make it known without being able to use something like itself?
First of all he didn’t start it big, he knew that if he made it exclusive people would want to join by nature so he started it with invites only. He invited people who thought they will be enthusiastic about it. Basically, he went for the tech community. This would help his website grow as they would share their “own stuff.”
He used social media, especially Twitter. Ryan asked literally thousands of people to share the website and invited them to it. He responded to every share by a thank you statement didn’t just leave a like, he was building a community of his own.
#3 Community Building
“After we got a good number of our friends and acquaintances on the site, and they seemed to like it and stick around after a few weeks, it was time to “launch,” said his friend Nathan Bashaw.
They launched with a pretty good number of users, with a known service to a community that was well created by Ryan and that’s what helped the grow this big.
Long story short Ryan was able to utilize everything he has got for his purpose and that’s what made him solve his own paradox and turn it into a very beneficial service.
