Egypt Needs Powerful Social Enterprises
We need startups that increase awareness, education levels, incomes and skills. Our community needs startups that make us better human beings. We need social startups on problems of education, awareness, poverty, homelessness, etc.
I believe that the social entrepreneurial system is broken. Some of the social entrepreneurs think they should be supported because they help the society. However, nearly 90% of social enterprises and nonprofits are doing the same work. They do have a positive impact but on a very small scale.
Let’s Take an Example…
Let’s take an example of a non-profit initiative aiming to help blind people to develop their skills and have better careers. The initiative would probably train around 500 persons per year and help 100 of them get a job. You helped 500 persons out of one million. This is not scalable, and probably won’t be very sustainable without constant external donations.
We need high tech startups that solve a social problem and can grow very fast to solve the problem on a bigger scale. There are two social startups that show this example of scalability really well.
Mumm is a “platform that connect home cooks (mostly mothers) with professionals who need fresh home food instead of fast food at work time.”
It can be a little surprising to consider Mumm as a social startup that’s making the society better. It’s just a food application, right?
Well, I got the privilege of meeting Mr.Waleed AbdelRahman, Founder and CEO of Mumm, and I asked him what he thinks the impact that Mumm is making on our society. He said, “I believe in Mumm and what we are doing. We are not just a food app. Some of Mumm cooks are widows & poor women and Mumm is their only source of income. There are many families that are dependent on their work through Mumm. This is also just the beginning. Mumm now is a premium service but on the long term we have a mission of ending hunger in Egypt and the world”.
Now THIS is social and scalable. Mumm is scaling and growing everyday. It is impacting new people everyday and providing reliable and safe source of income to them. Mumm is helping them out! They’re great!

One last thing you need to know is that these startups are totally different from each other. However the two things that they all have in common:
A) They’re all solving big problems that we face.
B) They all have very experienced talented founders and great team behind them.
Get as much experience as you can, learn and grow everyday, find a problem that you’re passionate about, fall in love with its solution and start executing!
I hope one day I can write about your story in the future just as I did for these startups 🙂
